CHAPTER THIRTEEN

NORA

The ruckus of voices down every hall made her heart swell. This was a place of opportunity. The chance to meet a hundred new people. Experience thousands of new things. It had been established early on that she wouldn’t go to college. Carmen was gone. Ronnie was basically a genius. If there was only means enough for one of them to go, the better bet was on Ronnie.

She’d found a way, in her own mind, to diminish college. A waste of money. Partying and getting nowhere. Who would really use an art degree anyway? At least with Ronnie, there would be a thousand different places she could take her skills and degree when she graduated. It was impractical for Nora to clutch at the idea of going away to school. Selfish even. But as she followed Loch down the nondescript hallway of the fifth floor of the dorm, she ached for the life she didn’t have.

“Hey,” a voice called from behind them. “You’re the two staying in Becca’s room, right?” A short girl with jet black hair and an earlobe full of studs waved them down. “Everyone is talking about you guys. What’s the deal? Are you like freaks with some kinky college fetish?”

“Yup,” Loch replied coolly. “So don’t bother knocking later. We’ll be busy.”

“Loch,” Nora scolded, slapping the back of her hand to his solid stomach muscles. “We’re just here for the night to audit some classes tomorrow. It’s nothing weird.”

The girl frowned. “It’s super weird. But also pretty intriguing. We weren’t really looking forward to having like some narc old people here to rat us out. We have Tom, an actually cool RA, and we have a good thing going here.”

Nora nodded as though she perfectly understood. “We’re not old. Or narcs. We’re seriously just going to lie low and be out of here tomorrow. Forget we’re here.”

Loch leaned over her shoulder. “Which will be hard when you hear her screaming my name later. You might want to keep your music turned up.”

The girl giggled. “They’re not lame,” she shouted back to a group behind her who looked like they were anxiously waiting for some assessment. “They’re freaks. It’s fine. The party is still on for tonight.”

“Party?” Nora whispered a pang of concern. It had been ages since she’d done anything even remotely close to a party.

“Nice,” Loch replied as he stood in front of the dorm room and turned the knob. “Let’s see what we’re working with.”

The bay window between the two beds let in a stream of glorious light. It cast a sparkling effect on the two beds which were covered with matching tie-dye comforters. The walls were dotted with unlit twinkle tights and Polaroid-style pictures artfully clipped to the strings. Two desks sat across from each other, neatly organized with tiny trinkets and one vase of fresh flowers.

“Damn,” Loch announced, as he tossed their bags onto one of the beds. “These girls are no slobs. I was nervous we’d end up in some undecorated smelly laundry pile of a room.
